Scale & Root Planing

What is Scale and Root Planing?

You’ve probably grown up hearing that you need to go to the dentist at least twice a year. But is it all that important?

We get this question a lot, and we understand why. You brush and floss regularly, so why do you even need to see the dentist for an exam and professional cleaning?

The answer is that while regularly brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day is critical to maintaining good oral health, professional cleanings are a next-level way to remove the sticky plaque from your teeth that cannot be taken off with regular brushing and flossing.

Root Scaling and Planing

If you reach an advanced stage of periodontal disease or suffer from chronic periodontitis, you may benefit from another type of dental cleaning known as root scaling and planning, also referred to as a deep teeth cleaning.

During this deep cleaning procedure, root scaling removes all loose deposits of hardened plaque and tartar from below the gum line along your tooth roots. Then, the planer smooths off rough areas near your root surfaces where the gum meets the crowns of your teeth.

These procedures allow us to see more clearly into your mouth to detect the early stages of gum disease and other conditions such as receding gums and bad breath. They also give us a chance to treat these different forms of gum disease without having to perform surgery, helping to prevent tooth loss.

Don’t put off your dental cleaning. Call us today to schedule an appointment.
